Jay Smith / April 20, 1962 — July 24, 2026

Jay stopped by the S1 Warehouse in 2022. He said a friend had given him an S1 Lifer Helmet and he really liked it. We got to talking and I happened to have the book "Back in the Day" by skate photographer William Sharp in the S1 Office. I was flipping through it and I said how about we have an artist illustrate one of your iconic skate photos and we can print some T-shirts and offer them on the S1 site and I can get you royalties. And Jay was stoked!

Jay passed away last week after a battle with cancer. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of his friends and family.

We still offer his shirt on the site here

All Royalties wil be continued to be tallied and paid to his family. Rest In Peace Jay. You left your mark on this world!

"Jay was low and loose, his power and speed untapped. A pioneer of shallow-end pool use, he snapped the hips. Yes, he did the layback extension, as everyone knows—full arm and elbow dragging, stretched out, Sims glove strap flapping open on impact as he slid his extra-long wheelbase past horizontal to bring it back underneath him.
